It's true that Iams moved the dogs (and presumably cats) to their own lab in Dayton.  However, they have refused to let anyone from animal welfare organizations inspect the facility.  So, the fact is that we don't know if the animals are treated better or not.  Procter & Gamble has a long history of cruelty to animals and they continue to use animals in cosmetic testing.  They're going to have to do more than just say they're complying with animal cruelty laws for me to believe it.

Whether you make it or someone else makes it and you buy it in a bag or can, that's all that really matters.

It may be all that matters to you and your pet, but there are other animals out there that should be protected as well.  It's also a good idea to remember that if your pet is ever lost or stolen, he could be sold to a research lab.  BTW, another way labs get dogs and cats is through newspaper ads that say "free kittens" or "free puppies."

Whats wrong with PETA, and more inportantly, WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO FEED OUR PETS?

I boycotted Iams/Euckanuba a while back, partly because of how they treat the animals in their facilites and partly because there are much much better food out there.  We feed Orion (our boxer) human grade foods (Human grade is actally kind of a misnomer because it itsn't processed in the same way meat we consume is, but it starts out as human grade).  We rotate between Canidae and California Natural.  Both foods are pretty much filler free, they use actual meat (no by-products or the meat that comes from the 4-Ds, dead, dying, diseased, decomposing).  The main thing for us is the fact that there isn't corn of any kind in them.  For those of you that don't know, boxers are notorious for being allergic to corn and other dogs just simply can't digest it.
These foods actually even out to be cheaper than Iams, Euk, Science Diet and all those so-called great foods.  I know the price tag looks bigger, but there's fewer fillers so they eat less, making it last longer.
So, they're cheaper and they're better for my dog.  Sure they're a little hard to find, but I'll take that in turn for them keeping my dog healthy.

I like Canidae too, and Felidae for cats.  Petco and such don't have it, but lots of smaller pet stores do.

I'm glad you like it!  I don't think I've ever heard of anyone complain about it, other than it being hard to find.
We have to drive an hour and a half to get both foods.   Sad   The closest Petco (and PetsMart) are also an hour and a half away, so you can imagine how often we go.  We lucked up and found the California Natural at Earthfare in Boone, NC.  Since we go to Boone about once a month anyway, it's turned out to be better for us.  Orion's doing beautifully on it, so we're going to stick with it a while.
My aunt has actually started feeding her cat the feline version of Cali. Nat. and he's doing so much better than he was on IAMs.  If we end up with another cat, they will definately eat Cali. Natural or Felidae.  Very Happy

My kitties are on a special diet - and I can only get the food from the vet - Royal Canine.  I'm allergic to Tide, so that's out.  I don't use fabric softener (I find that my clothes are fine the way that they are, and I air dry) and I use an organic toothpaste (can't remember the name of it, though).  It seems that I've already boycotted most of the stuff on this list.

This is kind of on a different note guys:)

I am a recent University Grad and have been looking for potential career opportunities with different companies.  I really had not idea the extent to which Proctor & Gamble would go to cut costs.  This company was one of the potential employers whom I have been trying to get on with for a the last couple of months. That has changed!

I have revoked my online resume, and have discontinued my job search with Proctor & Gamble.  However, this topic has also made me realize how we as consumers really have no idea how are products are made and who they are tested on.  I have been using Pantene Pro-v shampoo and conditioner since i was six years old.  I am 26 today!  I have been supporting P & G for 20 years by buying their hair products, not to mention all of the other products that I have used up until now.

I can't imagine all those poor animals being used as torture  devices just so that we can brush our teeth, wash our clothes and condition our hair!

Word of mouth is the one of the most powerful ways to get an idea across, so I will make sure that I tell anyone who is willing to listen about the atrocities being committed by one of the most well-known international companies.

Looks like this thread has been going on for quite a while, but I'm new... so I checked out the links provided. I was outraged and wrote a letter to Iams. Today I got a letter back from "Nicole @ Iams". She said the information I recieved was outdated and incorrect... that it had been taken from a facility that did not have the company's authorization and that the company launched an investigation with the co-operation of the ASPCA and the Humane Society. She also said the company is opposed to any testing that results in animals being euthanized, and that their goal is to end testing on animals altogether, and that they only do minimal testing on animals. That the animals are adopted out to loving homes afterwards, or if they cannot find a home, are sent to an animal retirement community. She also provided me with some links and a number to call if I have anymore questions.

I expected there would be some kind of CYA form letter they send out to people who write about this, so I'm not saying I believe everything that was said. I just thought I'd let ya'll know what was said.

This brought me to tears and sickened my stomach. To think that a company I have trusted  to feed my pets for so many years was committing such cruel acts to defenseless animals! Thanks for the heads up! My most recent purchase of Iams was the last.

Sorry to bump this I just wanted to add a couple things.

I am a big animal lover. I have four dogs and four cats and two horses and they are very spoiled including homeprepared diets.

What I wanted to add is that what happened at Iams is in no way unusual. Any grocery store brand of dog food company is going to do testing that we/I don't approve of or want to support.

There are holistic lines of dog food that go out of their way to do humane testing and help animals. (Naturapet went to great lengths to describe their 'testing' which includes rescuing test dogs and cats, rehabilitating them, feeding them and watching their fecal and hair samples and then rehoming with employees having first call)

These brands may seem more expensive at first but they truly aren't. The quality is so much higher than common brands you only feed a small percentage of what you normally would. I have a friend with filas (brazilian mastiffs) who only eat four cups of food a day on the Innova EVO! Plus they are healthier in the long run which also saves money.

Those are just a couple things people should probably keep in mind when checking a brand.

I have more but I'll save it Wink
