After reading Lark's topic on on-line Wicca schools (Correllian) I have come to a conclusion that it must be a very difficult task for a newcomer to the path to choose a source of information, school, group on-line.

There appears to be many traps and pitfalls to the unwary, to the point of being dragged into a cult centering on a charismatic personality with a hidden agenda.

I would like to point out Bonewits's "Cult Danger Evaluation Frame".  He takes 18 points that any one can use to measure or judge the danger level of any on-line or off-line group to avoid being conned by a fraudulent teacher.

It's in "Bonewits's Essential Guide to Druidism" or in his first book "Real Magic." And also on:

(I hope I'm not breaking any rules here).

I would also advise to read as widely as possible and Larks's lists are exemplary, and of course practice.

Bright Blessings,

Hagred

Hi Hagred,

It is indeed difficult for those new to Wicca and other Pagan religions to figure out what information is good and what is not.  The Bonewitz evaluation method is very useful indeed in examining a group you're thinking of joining.  And equally as vital is listening to your gut when meeting strangers.  If they make you feel uncomfortable go with that feeling.  And never, ever meet with strangers the first time in a place that isn't public.

Not everyone who claims to be Pagan is.  Some are predators looking for the unwary.  So always be cautious.
