My cousin had her baby yesterday, six weeks early.  Baby Carver was born with his guts on the outside of his body.  Apparently the wall of his belly never connected.  The doctors tried one surgery on him, and decided to let him rest for a few days to see if the blood was circulating any better, and he is going in for surgery again at 10 tomorrow morning.  If everything works out, baby and momma will have a long hospital stay to make sure that he's okay.

Please Keep baby Carver and Momma Richele in your prayers.

Hi Ara,

But of course, consider it done.  Do keep us posted on his progress.  Hopefully baby and Mom will go home soon and everything will be well.

What a struggle of a way to begin life.  Will of course, keep the child in mind in the ritual heavy days to come!
I have heard of this problem before, and have heard of good repairs....it seems so unfair that the poor little child has to contend with premature birth and a major surgical challenge!

I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about how mom & baby are doing?

I will continue to send energy their way. If anyone hears news, please post an update! Thanks!

Just got a phone call from the momma.

Carver's second surgery went good.  Let me go grab the update from the baby's grandmama.

"Carver finished with surgery #2.  The doc would have liked to have more good tissue to work with in the intestines but said he was much more hopeful then he was after the surgery on Saturday. Carver is a little fighter with a strong strong heart. He will remain in ICU.His momma heads home tonight, but will be by his side as much as possible.

We can not hold little Carver for weeks if all goes well. Momma and Daddy can touch him when his Blood Pressure is stable (has stayed that way over 23 hours now)..

No surgery's in the near future unless something happens .. it will be a while. He will have a little bag out the side of his abdomen, as he has no connection yet to the colon but they hope to be able to connect it at some point. He has some of his colon missing but it should be enough to work with.

He also had his appendix out, they where close to all the bad tissue and needed out, so one less thing to worry about in later life."

When she called me today, I could tell Carver's Momma was smiling, and itching to get up to see him.  Sounds like things are going to go better from here on out.  We're praying now that there's no infection, so nothing else goes wrong.

I know some of you are nurses.  Any body have any idea how long an infant's intestines are?  I think Richele said that the doctor took out about twelve centimeters of the intestines, but I wasn't sure how long it was, and how much he would have left.

I'll send updates next time I get them.

Always
Ara.

Hi Ara,

Thanks for the update.  It sounds like everything is progressing well.  In answer to your question, in a newborn over 35 weeks gestation the normal length of the small bowel is 250 cm, so Carver still has plenty left for normal bowel function. And there should be enough colon left as well.  As you've noted, at some future date when he is a bit bigger and stronger he will need to have another surgery to connect the bowel so that he can have normal bowel movements instead of having the colostomy and pouch.

I will certainly continue to keep Carver and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

Carver's Gramma posts an update every day.  Let me go get the latest Smiley

Okay, so this is what I found out (This is Saturday's Update.  I haven't heard anything today).

Carver is still in NIC unit, but still fighting hard.  Holding on to his Momma's hand whenever she's there.  The Doctor's say that he's responding well to the antibiotics, and he's only on half of the pain meds that he has been on.

His cousin, Zadie (I think she's three or four, now) took a picture of Carver Trick-or-Treating, because she felt bad that he was stuck in the hospital instead of having fun with them.  So cute Smiley

According to the captions of some pictures, he's breathing on his own, too Smiley  I hope it's okay, I wanted to post some pictures of this beautiful baby Smiley  The first is before his second surgery, and the second was after the second surgery.  his insides are all tucked back in, and that's his momma with him.

Thanks for the prayers.  I'll post more when I hear another update Smiley
