Since I do live in the Pac Nor'west, trees are what we have the most of (NOT letting my mind look at I-5, that is) and so way last year I promised to cut some wood for wands to send to friends who live in less endowed places.

Yesterday, I located a small stand of rowans (mountain ash) and since it was firmly encircled by a thicket of blackberry, my booted mate waded in and cut me several branches.  I will be cutting these into appropriate lengths and mailing them to those who requested them.

In the chance anyone here (those who know and trust me sufficiently to not fear snail mail) is interested, I expect to have some left over.(edit: as it happens one very slender piece about 21 inches long, and one thicker one that is barely 11-12")  Besides the rowan, I can offer hawthorn and holly wood for wands....as well as more common things like fir, apple, cherry, etc.  Also some odd ones like quince (very lovely the gift wand I made of that), and rose.
And for anyone brave, since it supposedly is forbidden to cut it w/o proper precautions, we have lots of elder here, too.

The rowan branches were harvested just as the moon is nearly in full "flower moon" status, as both rowan and hawthorn jumped into bloom with the temperature spike.  If anyone has a special moon-timing that goes along with a wood request---let me know (for anything but the already cut rowan that is).

I can't recall whether or not you had posted this on LJ. If so, I may have already told you.

I am very interested in a wand if you have one left over. I have looked at quite a few wands, and none have ever seem to fit me. I'll message you about it later, I have to go back into work for now.

Take care Smiley

I may have had it up a good deal earlier on LJ.  I have some rowan left, but rather slender pieces.  These are not finished wands, but only the ready to work wood, bark and all.  I do make wands upon request on occasion, four to date.
Two were of holly, one for a friend and the other went to one of our aircraft carriers to a pagan group there.  One was made of quince for a gift, and one was made of mistletoe.  My own wand is, as I was informed to my shock, "scary looking" as it is made of 23 inches of rose cane with barely blunted thorns.  It is thicker than my index finger and used rather rarely---usually when I am deep into justice issues and working.

That mistletoe wand was the first I ever made, for a friend born on the 23rd of December--it was a partial tease at the fictious 'calendar of trees' because that one day of the year is "outside" the tree calendar.  So, for him I picked the one wood that never grows out of the ground---part of the forest and yet not.  It was a small wand...barely eleven inches long, as finding a piece of mistletoe with that much wood was a rare treat.

I am considering making myself a less ominous looking wand of a mix of woods.  Still deciding whether to attempt a fusion of rowan and hawthorn, or the hawthorn and holly.  Yes, lol, I DO like pointy plants....can't fight my nature entirely!

Let me know if I can cut something for you, if not the slight rowan....something else.  But I will hold onto the spare rowan until you let me know.

I would love the spare Rowan. If you would be willing to cut i t, I can pay for the work. If not, that is not a problem at all. If you don't, I will most likely just do some wood burning on it.

My staff has a lot of that on it. It was part of a tree that had been burned, yet continued to grow afterwards. The result has an awesome effect. Some of the wood grew over the burned areas. When the temperature changes the burned areas get darker and stand out. There are a few symbols and other things burned into the wood.

Whatever you wish to do let me know.

I will post the spare rowan to you (PM me an address?)...it is trimmed to be 21" long, you may take the bark off and wood burn or whatever to make it your own.  I usually wood-burn and use a dremel tool to create small hollows where tiny branchlets were removed.  I then fill these hollows with tiny raw gemstones and the like.

The best wands, I remain convinced, are those you create for yourself! But if you are pressed for time, craft supplies and the like and want a finished wand, given time I could do that as well.  Either way....the wood is fresh cut and needs to dry a while before working.

That would be awesome Smiley. I am about to change duty stations, so I am not sure what my new address will be next month. Mind if I wait until next month to let you know?

I am actually interested in making a set of ogham staves using the actual woods that correspond to each of the tree ogham.  I'd be real interested in pieces of the rowan, hawthorn, holly, elder, fir and apple..and anything else you might have.  I'd need pieces about three inches long and preferably about the thickness of a thumb; although I could work with something slightly smaller.  Let me know what you've got that might work and I'll PM you with my home addy.

Let me get my book on ogham and go down the list of trees here!  I would be happy to work on it...I likely have about ten of them w/o walking more than a mile outside my yard.  I do have one piece of rowan left that is long enough, but it is a skinny 'thumb'lol!

Cool!  A skinny thumb will do quite nicely.

There's a good listing of the woods at http://www.geocities.com/wellesley/1294/meanings_of_the_ogham_staves.html?200728

A bit different list than what I found.  I don't have my book any longer; I forgot, I sent it off to the aircraft carrier along with a pile of other lesser used books.

The list I had elsewhere:
Birch
Rowan
Alder
Willow
ash
Hawthorne
oak
Holly
Hazel
Apple
vine
Ivy
Reed?
blackthorne
Elder
Silver Fir
furze
Heather
poplar
Yew
spindle
Honeysuckle
Pine
Beech

Those in lower case on this list are ones I don't think I can find close by.

I would love one in Willow or Holly.  Send me a PM.  I've never gotten a wand before, but I've been looking around to try to find one.  I finally moved into my own place so that I can do what I want to do without my mother's disaprooving stare, or the dormatory's rules about not having candles, incense, or the like.

Since I just pruned a big walk-way blocking branch off the holly to accomodate Lark, I have a couple good pieces that will be perfect wand blanks.  Do you have a length in mind that I should cut it to match?  You may PM an address, of course.  Now, all the stuff cut today will need to dry a  bit before working for wands...tho' I grant, stripping wood off holly is easier to do 'wet.'
