okay this is going to seem like a stupid question, but lately I was wondering, why do people want to contact spirits? I can understand why someone would want to talk to a spirit that was close to them, but why do we contact complete strangers(in the spirit world) I seen a spirit when I was 5 and it scared me so bad.  I dont think it was a good one, because I have also had a good one contact me.  The good spirit made me feel so warm and happy inside, while the negitive one or bad one as I call it, made me feel so scared, hopeless, and alone.  I was just wondering why do people contact complete stranger spirits for advice.  How do you know if they are good or bad, do you feel it in your gut? do they tell you?  Why are they good with advice.  I dont want to open any doors into a world that may cause me harm... but at the same time I dont want to miss something important by not contacting spirits.  Does anyone have a simple answer?

Why do people want to do anything?

It's a matter of personal taste.

For myself, I have enough trouble tolerating the living people I have to deal with.  I see no need to compound the headaches by adding to the list.

Yeah, ya know, I read your post a few times, Vicky....(sorry, mind if I call you Vicky? I can't remember your whole name)  ..and I don't know anyone who legitimately summons unknown spirits for direction...

In my experience, you kinda have to know the spirit you wanna talk to...

trying to summon someone you don't know is kinda like standing on the street corner with your questions on a piece of cardboard and hoping someone drives by with some answers...and then hoping they are the answers you want to hear...

lol thats true, thats my thoughts exactly. The only reason I am asking is because someone in my myspace groups asked for spells to summon spirits.  and we all basically told them, it was dangerous to open a doorway into the unknown... especially when you are just starting out in wicca.

Children shouldn't play with dead things, period!

Sending messages to departed loved ones is one thing, summoning the spirits of the dead is quite another matter.  Suppose you summon something/someone up and then that entity decides it likes hanging around making your life miserable?

Why is it that so many kids who decide to explore witchcraft suddenly develop a desire to start messing with someone else's dearly departed relatives?  Would they be happy if I decided to start comuning with their dead kin folk?

On the local supernatural radio show (because we all have one, right? LOL), there was a guest on a couple weeks ago who had played around with binding, conjuring, and love spells when she was 13.  Basically, she'd heard that her great-grandmother was a bruja and her uncle still practiced, so she thought it would be "cool".  Well, somewhere in all her screwing around, she conjured a spirit (actually, she called it a demon) that has been following her for the past twenty-something years.  This thing has caused her to move to different cities and has cost her a couple of jobs and a marriage.  And the love spells that she did?  Apparently one of her bindings wore off or lost its effectiveness, and the couple in question turned violent towards each other.

That being said, I would like to learn more about communicating with loved ones who have crossed the veil, but I'm not going to go messing with the spirit world until I'm sure I know what I'm doing.  I'll probably post a thread about that later Tongue

I doubt that the bindings "wore off" or lost their effectiveness in any way. Binding two people together for life (or worse yet, forever) often has disastrous results like this. When the love breaks down, they are unable to leave each other and move on. Instead, they are forced to stay together even though they don't want to be. Stalkings and abusive relationships are common outcomes of such foolish bindings.

thats why im glad I joined this forum, I learn something new everytime I log on.  I never knew about binding at all.  Isnt binding people together (even in the best of interests) still messing with their free will? I can see why it would have a bad outcome.  I wouldnt want someone to bind me to ANYTHING, out of the goodness of their heart... I want the freedom to choose.

I can't think of any possible reason anyone would have to bind two people together in a relationship, unless it would be petty revenge.  In my mind, the only kind of binding that is permissable is that which protects you or someone you love.

Well, "wore off" was the term she used.  She stopped doing any sort of spellwork when she was 14, so it's not as if she studied the effects and consequences of what she was messing around with.

And I know very little about spellwork, so I have no idea about spells wearing off or losing effectiveness or whatever.  Which is why I don't play with magick!  I'd like to have an idea of what I'm doing before I start casting spells.

And like Shadow said: Children shouldn't play with dead things! Ever!
