Ryans got to do a R.E project for school and I thought I'd run it past everyone here to see if you all had some ideas.

The criteria is :           To compare and contrast creation stories from 3 different cultures - one from one of the world faiths, one from a tribal culture and one from the scientific comunity, eg: Darwin.

I was thinking of Native American for the tribal culture but we're not sure what to choose from the world faiths but we'd like it to be a bit different from everyone elses'.

Any websites or books that you can recommend for research on the Native American beliefs would be great and any other ideas will be gratefully recieved by my 'slightly confused 12 year old'.

Thank you.............     Kate.

I'm just wondering if "world faiths" only includes the big three, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, or if it includes all of the ones that most people have heard of--Buddhism, Hinduism, Shinto, Taoism, Anglican, Confucianism, Mormonism, and Unitarian Universalist.

Personally, I've always found Hinduism and Confucianism to be particularly fascinating.

Anglicans are Christians, by the way.

I'm sorry, I didn't make myself clear.  I cited Anglican and Mormonism as different denominations of Christianity, suggesting that perhaps her topic could be a sect of Christianity that is less-known than others.

Well, Mormonism is distinctly different from Christianity. While they accept the Bible, their primary scripture is the Book of Mormon, and their belief system is a radical departure from any other Christian church (including a belief in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that the New Jerusalem will be built on the American continent). Mormonism is comprised of a number of denominations that believe in the teachings of Joseph Smith, the largest being the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Anglican church, on the other hand, is about as mainstream Christian as you can get. The Anglican communion is the third largest communion in the world, after the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. The American Episcopal Church is part of the Anglican communion, as is the Church of England. While their style of worship differs from other denominations, their beliefs are mainstream Protestant Christian.

I'm an Episcopalian.  Some ( a lot of us) like to think of ourselves as both Catholic and Protestant..the Via Media or Middle way.  But yes, Anglicans are Christians.  I've always thought Mormons were Christian because of their belief in Christ...It seems that's all it takes these days to call one's self a Christian.

I would not get into Denominations of religions...pick one major world religion and just use the general guidelines.  I'd suggest picking something besides Christianity, just because it's so fractured right now...

As the old saying goes, "As long as Catholics keep marrying Baptists, there will always be Episcopalians!"

A: To get to the middle.

Thank you for the web site addresses.

Ryan has more of an idea of what he wants to do now.
Where we live is quite rural and the village does celebrate some of the Pagan festivals, so he can pretty much include anything.

I did think that Buddhism would be interesting.

Thanks all.

You know what Robin Williams says about the Episcopal Church.  It's like Catholic Light, all of the ceremony but only one thrid of the guilt.
