Earlier today, I was talking to a friend of mine, online, about which element best suited a wand. Some people say fire, some people say air. Well, anyway, I was just discussing about the use of a wand for invocation, when, without my knowledge, her boyfriend took over the conversation. He said that the element should definately be air because wands were originally used by Druids to manipulate the weather.

He went on to say that the Druids got this idea by copying Hellenic 'Recons' (which I assume means reconstructionists). He also stated that he wasn't talking about Neo-Druidism, which he doesn't believe in, but original Druidry.

Are my instincts right that this guy is full of crap?

Sounds like it to me, though I admit I don't know a lot about the original Druids.

That's the same with me. It's not something I've really studied, but it just doesn't sound right.

From what I understand no-one knows much about the orriginal Druids.

They kept an oral tradition and what little written information we have is from a few Roman documents which are decididly biased and generally written either as war propergander or many years after the Druids had been mostly (or compleatly) wiped out (and certianly thier power broken) by the conquests of Gaul, Britain and the other Celtic nations followed by convertion to Christanity. Little physical evidance has survived either, again the Romans worked hard to obblitorate and the Celts and esspecally the Druids did not keep/have arceologycal instructive items.

The result is a lot of congecture, extrapilation and general guess work at the scientific end... and out right lies, myths and fanciful stories at the other.

Unless your friend is a learned professor who has really studied the cultures of that period, I would take what he says about Druids, Romans, Greeks et al and thier beliefs and practices... with a large pinch of salt.

Be bright, be bold
