My partner fell asleep on the couch a few nights ago, and he told me that he dreamed, just before I woke him up, that a black figure was standing over him, looking down at him.  I realize that it could have been me, but last night he told me that he was dreaming it again, only this time, he was sleeping in our bed, and in the dream, the figure was walking out of the living room, through the computer room, toward our bedroom.  I told him that the only thing I could think of was that it was his Shadow Self.  Any ideas on what (if anything) it is, or what it might mean as a dream symbol?  Thanks.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that it was just a dream. It's worth investigating on that level to determine what his subconscious is trying to tell him. You can still search for other explanations, but I think it's always a good idea to investigate things in a well rounded manner.

Have you ever had a break in? Or has he or had a fear of a break in? Sound like a possible manifestation of sub conscious fear to me, but I could be wrong

Try asking him what emotions, thoughts, or sensations he experienced while seeing this image. The emotional content of the dream is often very important to the interpretation.

He is probably the person most able to interpret this dream, but he may need someone to bounce things off of. Ask him questions about the details, and then about any asociations those details may bring up for him. I have found that it is often the small details, the particulars of a dream, that form the key to its interpretation.

The dream state is amazingly literal - think of any metaphors that may relate to the literal images he relates. Figures of speech like up against a wall, hanging by a thread,  taking a stab at, or  not being able to handle something, all can mainfest literally in dream imagery, and can be clues to the dreams real meanings.

Without having a lot more information, I wouldn't even begin to try this one.

Bright blessings,
Jennie

Oh, I'm definitely not ruling out that it was probably a dream.

I'll be sure to ask him how he felt about it.

I had a similar dream yesterday.  In this one, I was coming out of a room, and a figure was there, but the figure sort of materialized infront of me.  When the figure appeared, I felt full of fear and then some kind of force dragged me backwards on the ground.

He said that it didn't make him feel like anything; it just was.  I don't know what to make of that.
