Well, the weathers been getting hotter and hotter with no sign of a good down pour.   So I sorted through the garden plants, like geraniums and Ivys, soaked them in the bath for a good drink and re-planted them in big decorative pots that I bought from the charity shop.   Hopefully they will have more chance of survival inside, out of the full glare of the sun.        The only things left in the garden is a rather brownish lawn and some tomato and strawberry plants.    Lots of plants can happily live indoors so I'd recommend rescuing what you can.    Its good for the fresh air in the house too but take care with poisonous plants with children and pets.

Somehow we have managed to keep our garden growing.

We have taken to using a number of tricks... Which definitly help.

We water late evening, so that the water does not evaporate so readily. It takes us about 1 hour to lug the four watering cans around to water stuff. Well, it keeps us fit!
We have picked plants that are drought resistant like sunflowers and meditarinian herbs (sage, tyme, rosemary, lavender etc.).
Using mulches and compost, improve the ability of the soil to retain moisture.
And water butts... lots of water butts, off every down pipe and even the bathroom 'grey' water, so everything from washing our teeth or showering ends up on the garden. The few little drops of rain that have fallen have all been saved and used too.
The potatoes this year have been totally grown off washing up water!
We have also moved some of our pot plants to the more sheltered and shady north side of the house.

But it is hard work, and we have lost some pot plants (mostly cupressers (sp) and firs) which are not suited to such hot sunny weather.

Good luck with your gardens.

Be bright, be bold
