I've known a lot of Pagans who worship specific deites, viewing them as the deities themselves. I have also known a lot of Pagans who have used the names of deities to represent an aspect of the divine.

I prefer to define my own religion rather than following another person's.

I've decided, rather than using existing deity names to represent aspects of the divine, I would use actual names (as in the type of name you'd give your child). I was checking out some sites where you can find meanings of names, and searching for names that relate to the aspect I wish to name.

Does this sound unusual to anyone? Has anyone else done something similar?

I don't think I've heard of it before, although I once referred to the Sky God as Ciel, which is French for sky or Heaven.  I think if you use a name that works for you and will help you grow closer to them, it's a great idea.

Yeah. I've come to a point in my life where I can no longer 'follow' a religion. I still, however, need a way to indentify the divine as I see it.

Sounds like a great idea... But sounds difficult to put into practice as well.  Please do inform what significant developments you make.

Have you tried asking Them what they wish you to call Them?

Just a thought...

'Tis the set of the sail, and not the gale, that determines the way we will go.

I don't believe in a 'them', I believe in an omnipresent divine. The reason I don't use the word them, is basically because I don't see the divine as a person. To refer to it as a person would be limiting.

The whole point of creating subdivisions (in my case) is to create a representation of an aspect of an otherwise indefinable thing. Depending on which aspect I want to relate to at the time, I will use a name that represents it appropriately.

I think that the divine has a way of signalling whether the names are appropriate, anyway. There have been some names I've considered, that have sounded good to me, but, for some reason, didn't feel right. I believe that most of the 'gut feelings' we get, are actually just the divine giving us hints.

Thanks for the suggestion though.
