You may not have found much info about it in Google because you've misspelled the term. It's "astral plane," not "astreal plains." (And it's gnawing, not knawing!)
Many esoteric philosophies talk of different planes of existance, each one corresponding to the different layers of the human aura. We're living in the physical plane, which corresponds to the body. The astral plane is, in many schemes of thought, equivalent to the emotional or even causative layer of the aura; in others, it's roughly the same as the spirit world.
The term "astral" is used because astral matter does not require a light source to make it visible. This is because astral matter gives off its own light, like stars do. Astral means "of or like stars," as does celestial.
However, people mean a LOT of different things when they say "astral plane." The original alchemists who coined the phrase meant one thing, the Theosophists who made the term popular meant another, New Age folk often mean something very different.
An excellent discussion of the term can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/rhygs
