There is no such thing as "TEEN WITCHCRAFT". It is not like there are two sets of rules and you have to live by a simpler set until you are "of age" to practice actual witchcraft or that you are no longer "in touch" once you get older.

These books that say they are devoted to putting witchcraft into terms that teens can understand and relate to are doing teens a great disservice. Teens are plenty smart enough and mature enough to read books like "A Witch Alone" or "Twenty-First Century Wicca", or any other basic books. (I only chose those two titles because they are in Lark's Welcome post that we all refer to so often.) Teens don't need some middle aged old snot trying to "talk teen" to them.

Most of the "Special Issues" that "only" affect teens that these authors rant about are the same damn issues that I, and every other adult on this board, went through when we were teens. They are even the same issues that the teen's parents went through. Telling these kids, who are at a time when they should be seeking the moral support of their parents and the other responsible adults in their lives, that the adults they should be trusting don't or can't understand them and they should turn to some author because she has written a "teen witchcraft" book just for them is irresponsible at best.

As for those few "teen" books that are actually written by some teen, well, these kids have plenty of teens at their local highschool to give them bad advice, they don't need one more kid doing it throught the pages of a book. Especially since so many people automatically assume that, "since it is in print it has to be fact".

This whole "teen witchcraft" craze is nothing more than a marketing ploy. The publishers have woken up and realized that in this uncertain economy the only ones who have reliable disposable income are teens and children. Since mom and dad tend to watch the younger kids more closely and won't let them buy witchcratft books these sharks prey on the adolescents.

When this came up on the old board, Trish mentioned that she has a "teen" book coming out soon.  While I agree with much of what Shadow said, Trish's books are one of the first places I look for well-researched, responsible and informative texts on witchcraft.  Also, she said that the first chapters address the very issues most of us complain about in teen books, why teens are interested in witchcraft and how they should talk to their familes about the choice.

I mention this because we are likely to soon have a book for teens that's worth recommending in spite of our doubts on the subject matter.  I'd never dismiss Trish's books out of hand without reading them.

^,,^= There are always kittens and cats out there who need help.  If you find one, call a local rescue group for help with care and placement.  In L.A. please contact Kitten Rescue at http://www.kittenrescue.org.  Thanks.
