a few of you are old enough to be my parents, and I don't have any anymore, so I thought I'd ask...

I've passed a couple kidney stones, had a reaction to sulfa drugs, broke out in hives, got on a different antibiotic,

All in the last 4 days

and am calling my primary care doc as soon as they open in a few minutes.

Is there any truth to the cranberry juice thing?  Should I go get some and start drinking it?  Is there anything else I should be drinking rather than Sprite, Sparkling water, and water?  Water has started to nausiate me so...and the sprite gives me "sugar mouth" which I don't like.  I have Apple juice here....

any answers will be considered Smiley

Again, don't tell me "herbal remedies" ...I'll get the medical advice from my doctor, I just want advice about beverages Smiley

Cranberry juice, in rather high amounts (like, a liter or more), is great for urinary tract infections and other bladder-related problems. You can get powdered cranberry in capsule form, which may allow you to get higher doses without drinking yourself into a stupor. Magnesium and potassium can also help a lot.

Other than that, water (and lots of it!), lemonade, and other fruit juces, are all recommended for kidney stones.

Jennie is a brilliant acupuncture physician and an expert in Chinese medicine, maybe she has some further advice.

There is some truth to the cranberry juice thing.  It will help raise acidity of the urine and dissolve small kidney stones..like in really small ones.

Dietary changes may be necessary depending on the composition of the stones.  But that will have to wait until you see your doctor.

Water is the best thing for flushing them out..avoid tea of any sort until the stones are tested for oxylates.  If you can, just add a bit of lemon or lime to the water to give it a bit more taste.  I like it that way without any sweetener at all.

I feel for ya, I had my one kidney stone many years ago and it was quite enough!

Kidney stones are awful things.  My mom had one several years ago.  Aside from what the others have said, I remember that the doctor also told her to cut down on the calcium in her diet because many times kidney stones are a build up on calcium.   He also told her to cut down on her salt intake.  It won't help at the moment, but it may help with future ones (assuming that that's your problem).

Definitely drink tons of water!  And when you think you've drunk enough, drink some more.

My mom ended up having to get hers blasted with a laser thing, so that she passed little bits for many days.  It was like (in her words) peeing gravel.  Not fun!  Hope the doctor can help you!

I was just reading that studies are showing that lemonade is great for people who are prone to kidney stones.  So much so that many of the more respected kidney centers are recomending it to their patients who are prone to developing them.  It really does help to inhibit the formation of new stones.

Hope this helps.

Not that I would know anything but I get the feeling that as far as Lemonade goes Sprite probably isn't great. I would imagine Cloudy Lemonade as well. Even better than that would be homemade lemonade. I appriciate that what I'm suggesting is more expensive but I'm pretty sure sprite is Water, Suger, fizz and flavourings.

Much Love

First let me say OUCH!

Now about lemonade and cranberry juice. DO NOT drink the stuff that is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. That sweetener has got to be the worst thing man ever came up with to put into his food. 100% fruit juice juices are the way to go to get the most benefit out of them.

Cut out ALL sodas, the carbonation is unhealthful on any number of levels. That includes your sparkling waters and juices, as well.

And if you are a coffee or regular Lipton type tea drinker, cut that out of your diet. Replace the regular tea with herbal fruit teas.

Aside from beverages, increase your aromatic vegetable intake. There is something in garlic and onions, etc. that helps break up stones and keeps them from forming again. And as a side benefit, the mosquitoes and biting insects will leave you alone, too.

Cranberry and raspberry is pretty good, Tesco do a good one, the raspberries sweeten it naturally as cranberry juice can taste quite dry.  Its good for all urinary tract problems.
I also find water with just a squeeze of fresh lemon in it stops me feeling sick, so do this as you'll need to be drinking lots of water, alternatively, Robinsons orange and barley drink made with hot water - that stops me feeling sick too.
Hope you feel better soon.    Kate.
